Al-Hijr (The Stoneland)

Translation

Verses 1-20

بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.

الر ۚ تِلْكَ آيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ وَقُرْآنٍ مُبِينٍ (1)

Alif Lam Ra. These are the signs of the book and an obvious Quran.
[Al Quran ; 15:1]

رُبَمَا يَوَدُّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَوْ كَانُوا مُسْلِمِينَ (2)

Perhaps those who have disbelieved wish that they had been submitters.
[Al Quran ; 15:2]

ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا وَيُلْهِهِمُ الْأَمَلُ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ (3)

Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by (false) hope, for they are going to know.
[Al Quran ; 15:3]

وَمَا أَهْلَكْنَا مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ مَعْلُومٌ (4)

And We did not destroy any village except that for it was a known decree.
[Al Quran ; 15:4]

مَا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ (5)

No nation will precede its term, nor will they delay.
[Al Quran ; 15:5]

وَقَالُوا يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِي نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ الذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ (6)

And they have said: O you upon whom the reminder has been sent down! Indeed, you are mad.
[Al Quran ; 15:6]

لَوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِالْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ (7)

Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?
[Al Quran ; 15:7]

مَا نُنَزِّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةَ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوا إِذًا مُنْظَرِينَ (8)

We do not send the angels down except in truth; and they (the unbelievers) would not then be reprieved.
[Al Quran ; 15:8]

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ (9)

Indeed, We have sent down the reminder, and indeed, We will be for it guardians.
[Al Quran ; 15:9]

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ فِي شِيَعِ الْأَوَّلِينَ (10)

And We have certainly sent (messengers) before you, among the sects of the former (people).
[Al Quran ; 15:10]

وَمَا يَأْتِيهِمْ مِنْ رَسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ (11)

And there never came a messenger to them except that they used to ridicule him.
[Al Quran ; 15:11]

كَذَٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهُ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ (12)

Thus do We insert it into the hearts of the criminals.
[Al Quran ; 15:12]

لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِ ۖ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ الْأَوَّلِينَ (13)

They do not believe in it, while already preceded the example of the former (people).
[Al Quran ; 15:13]

وَلَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ بَابًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فَظَلُّوا فِيهِ يَعْرُجُونَ (14)

And even if We had opened upon them a gate from the sky so that they continued therein to ascend.
[Al Quran ; 15:14]

لَقَالُوا إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَارُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ مَسْحُورُونَ (15)

They would have said: Indeed, our visions have been confused; rather, we are a people affected by illusions.
[Al Quran ; 15:15]

وَلَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا فِي السَّمَاءِ بُرُوجًا وَزَيَّنَّاهَا لِلنَّاظِرِينَ (16)

And We have certainly made in the sky constellations and have decorated it for the observers.
[Al Quran ; 15:16]

وَحَفِظْنَاهَا مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ رَجِيمٍ (17)

And We have guarded it against every pelted devil.
[Al Quran ; 15:17]

إِلَّا مَنِ اسْتَرَقَ السَّمْعَ فَأَتْبَعَهُ شِهَابٌ مُبِينٌ (18)

Except one who sneaks a hearing and is pursued by an obvious meteor.
[Al Quran ; 15:18]

وَالْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَاهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَاسِيَ وَأَنْبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مَوْزُونٍ (19)

And the earth, We have spread it and placed therein firm mountains and caused to grow therein of every well-balanced thing.
[Al Quran ; 15:19]

وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَايِشَ وَمَنْ لَسْتُمْ لَهُ بِرَازِقِينَ (20)

And We have made for you therein means of livings and (for) those for whom you are not providers.
[Al Quran ; 15:20]

Al-Hijr (The Stoneland)

Translation

Verses 21-40

وَإِنْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا عِنْدَنَا خَزَائِنُهُ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُ إِلَّا بِقَدَرٍ مَعْلُومٍ (21)

And there is not a thing except that with Us are its treasures, and We do not send it down except according to a specified measure.
[Al Quran ; 15:21]

وَأَرْسَلْنَا الرِّيَاحَ لَوَاقِحَ فَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَسْقَيْنَاكُمُوهُ وَمَا أَنْتُمْ لَهُ بِخَازِنِينَ (22)

And We have sent the winds as fertilizers and sent down from the sky water and given you drink from it. And you are not for it treasurers.
[Al Quran ; 15:22]

وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُحْيِي وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحْنُ الْوَارِثُونَ (23)

And indeed, We give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritors.
[Al Quran ; 15:23]

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنْكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا الْمُسْتَأْخِرِينَ (24)

And We have certainly known those who preceded from among you, and We have certainly known the later.
[Al Quran ; 15:24]

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ (25)

And indeed, your Lord is He who will gather them. Indeed, He is Wise, Knowing.
[Al Quran ; 15:25]

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِنْ حَمَإٍ مَسْنُونٍ (26)

And We have certainly created the human out of clay from a shaped black mud.
[Al Quran ; 15:26]

وَالْجَانَّ خَلَقْنَاهُ مِنْ قَبْلُ مِنْ نَارِ السَّمُومِ (27)

And the jinn We created before from a scorching fire.
[Al Quran ; 15:27]

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي خَالِقٌ بَشَرًا مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِنْ حَمَإٍ مَسْنُونٍ (28)

And when your Lord said to the angels: Indeed, I will create a human out of clay from a shaped black mud.
[Al Quran ; 15:28]

فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِنْ رُوحِي فَقَعُوا لَهُ سَاجِدِينَ (29)

And when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, fall down to him in prostration.
[Al Quran ; 15:29]

فَسَجَدَ الْمَلَائِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ (30)

And the angels prostrated all together.
[Al Quran ; 15:30]

إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰ أَنْ يَكُونَ مَعَ السَّاجِدِينَ (31)

Except Iblis, he refused to be with those who prostrated.
[Al Quran ; 15:31]

قَالَ يَا إِبْلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ السَّاجِدِينَ (32)

(Allah) said: O Iblis! What is the matter with you that you are you not with those who prostrated?
[Al Quran ; 15:32]

قَالَ لَمْ أَكُنْ لِأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِنْ حَمَإٍ مَسْنُونٍ (33)

(Iblis) said: I am not to prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from a shaped black mud.
[Al Quran ; 15:33]

قَالَ فَاخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ (34)

(Allah) said: Then get out of it, for indeed, you are to be pelted.
[Al Quran ; 15:34]

وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ اللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ (35)

And indeed, upon you is the curse until the day of recompense.
[Al Quran ; 15:35]

قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنْظِرْنِي إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ (36)

(Iblis) said: My Lord! Then reprieve me until the day they are resurrected.
[Al Quran ; 15:36]

قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ الْمُنْظَرِينَ (37)

(Allah) said: So indeed, you are of those reprieved.
[Al Quran ; 15:37]

إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْوَقْتِ الْمَعْلُومِ (38)

Unil the day of the time well-known.
[Al Quran ; 15:38]

قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ (39)

(Iblis) said: My Lord! Because You have put me in error, I will surely decorate for them in the land and put them in error all together.
[Al Quran ; 15:39]

إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ الْمُخْلَصِينَ (40)

Except Your devote servants among them.
[Al Quran ; 15:40]

Translation

Verses 41-60

قَالَ هَٰذَا صِرَاطٌ عَلَيَّ مُسْتَقِيمٌ (41)

(Allah) said: This is a straight path upon Me.
[Al Quran ; 15:41]

إِنَّ عِبَادِي لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَانٌ إِلَّا مَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْغَاوِينَ (42)

Indeed, (as for) My servants, you have over them no authority, except those who follow you from among the deviators.
[Al Quran ; 15:42]

وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ (43)

And indeed, Hell is the promised place for them all together.
[Al Quran ; 15:43]

لَهَا سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَابٍ لِكُلِّ بَابٍ مِنْهُمْ جُزْءٌ مَقْسُومٌ (44)

For it are seven gates; for every gate is of them a designated portion.
[Al Quran ; 15:44]

إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ (45)

Indeed, the pious will be in gardens and springs.
[Al Quran ; 15:45]

ادْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَامٍ آمِنِينَ (46)

Enter it in peace, secure.
[Al Quran ; 15:46]

وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِي صُدُورِهِمْ مِنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَانًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُتَقَابِلِينَ (47)

And We will remove whatever in their chests of rancour; brothers on couches facing each other.
[Al Quran ; 15:47]

لَا يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيهَا نَصَبٌ وَمَا هُمْ مِنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِينَ (48)

Fatigue will not touch them therein, nor from it will they be expelled.
[Al Quran ; 15:48]

نَبِّئْ عِبَادِي أَنِّي أَنَا الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ (49)

Inform My servants that I am the Forgiving, the Merciful.
[Al Quran ; 15:49]

وَأَنَّ عَذَابِي هُوَ الْعَذَابُ الْأَلِيمُ (50)

And that it is My torture that is the painful torture.
[Al Quran ; 15:50]

وَنَبِّئْهُمْ عَنْ ضَيْفِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ (51)

And inform them about the guests of Ibrahim.
[Al Quran ; 15:51]

إِذْ دَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا سَلَامًا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنْكُمْ وَجِلُونَ (52)

When they entered upon him and said: Peace. (Ibrahim) said: Indeed, we are of you apprehensive.
[Al Quran ; 15:52]

قَالُوا لَا تَوْجَلْ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَامٍ عَلِيمٍ (53)

They said: Do not be apprehensive; indeed, we give you good tidings of a knowledgeable boy.
[Al Quran ; 15:53]

قَالَ أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِي عَلَىٰ أَنْ مَسَّنِيَ الْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ (54)

He (Ibrahim) said: Do you give me good tidings despite old age has come upon me? So of what do you give me good tidings?
[Al Quran ; 15:54]

قَالُوا بَشَّرْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُنْ مِنَ الْقَانِطِينَ (55)

They said: We have given you good tidings in truth, so be not of the despairing.
[Al Quran ; 15:55]

قَالَ وَمَنْ يَقْنَطُ مِنْ رَحْمَةِ رَبِّهِ إِلَّا الضَّالُّونَ (56)

He (Ibrahim) said: And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except the misguided?
[Al Quran ; 15:56]

قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا الْمُرْسَلُونَ (57)

He (Ibrahim) said: Then what is your story, O messengers?
[Al Quran ; 15:57]

قَالُوا إِنَّا أُرْسِلْنَا إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُجْرِمِينَ (58)

They said: Indeed, we are sent to a criminal people.
[Al Quran ; 15:58]

إِلَّا آلَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ (59)

Except the family of Lut, indeed, We will save them all together.
[Al Quran ; 15:59]

إِلَّا امْرَأَتَهُ قَدَّرْنَا ۙ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ الْغَابِرِينَ (60)

Except his woman; We (Allah) decreed that she will be of those who remain behind.
[Al Quran ; 15:60]

Translation

Verses 61-80

فَلَمَّا جَاءَ آلَ لُوطٍ الْمُرْسَلُونَ (61)

And when the messengers came to the family of Lut,
[Al Quran ; 15:61]

قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ مُنْكَرُونَ (62)

He (Lut) said: Indeed, you are a people unknown.
[Al Quran ; 15:62]

قَالُوا بَلْ جِئْنَاكَ بِمَا كَانُوا فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ (63)

They (The angels) said: Rather, we have come to you with that about which they used to dispute.
[Al Quran ; 15:63]

وَأَتَيْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَادِقُونَ (64)

And we have come to you with truth; and indeed, we are truthful.
[Al Quran ; 15:64]

فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ وَاتَّبِعْ أَدْبَارَهُمْ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنْكُمْ أَحَدٌ وَامْضُوا حَيْثُ تُؤْمَرُونَ (65)

So travel with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind and let not anyone among you look back and continue to where you are commanded.
[Al Quran ; 15:65]

وَقَضَيْنَا إِلَيْهِ ذَٰلِكَ الْأَمْرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَٰؤُلَاءِ مَقْطُوعٌ مُصْبِحِينَ (66)

And We conveyed to him of that command, that the back of these would be severed by the morning.
[Al Quran ; 15:66]

وَجَاءَ أَهْلُ الْمَدِينَةِ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ (67)

And the people of the city came rejoicing.
[Al Quran ; 15:67]

قَالَ إِنَّ هَٰؤُلَاءِ ضَيْفِي فَلَا تَفْضَحُونِ (68)

He (Lut) said: Indeed, those are my guests, so do not shame me.
[Al Quran ; 15:68]

وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَلَا تُخْزُونِ (69)

And fear Allah and do not disgrace me.
[Al Quran ; 15:69]

قَالُوا أَوَلَمْ نَنْهَكَ عَنِ الْعَالَمِينَ (70)

They said: Have we not forbidden you from (protecting) people?
[Al Quran ; 15:70]

قَالَ هَٰؤُلَاءِ بَنَاتِي إِنْ كُنْتُمْ فَاعِلِينَ (71)

He (Lut) said: Those are my daughters, if you should be doers (of legal marriage).
[Al Quran ; 15:71]

لَعَمْرُكَ إِنَّهُمْ لَفِي سَكْرَتِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ (72)

By your life! They were in their intoxication wandering blindly.
[Al Quran ; 15:72]

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِينَ (73)

So the shriek seized them at sunrise.
[Al Quran ; 15:73]

فَجَعَلْنَا عَالِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِنْ سِجِّيلٍ (74)

And We made its highest its lowest and rained upon them stones of hot clay.
[Al Quran ; 15:74]

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ (75)

Indeed, in that are signs for the examiners.
[Al Quran ; 15:75]

وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِيلٍ مُقِيمٍ (76)

And indeed, it is on an established road.
[Al Quran ; 15:76]

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ (77)

Indeed, in that is a sign for the believers.
[Al Quran ; 15:77]

وَإِنْ كَانَ أَصْحَابُ الْأَيْكَةِ لَظَالِمِينَ (78)

And indeed, the companions of the thicket were unjust.
[Al Quran ; 15:78]

فَانْتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامٍ مُبِينٍ (79)

So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both are on a clear highway.
[Al Quran ; 15:79]

وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أَصْحَابُ الْحِجْرِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ (80)

And the companions of the stoneland have certainly denied the messengers.
[Al Quran ; 15:80]

Translation

Verses 81-99

وَآتَيْنَاهُمْ آيَاتِنَا فَكَانُوا عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ (81)

And We gave them Our signs, but they were from them turning away.
[Al Quran ; 15:81]

وَكَانُوا يَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا آمِنِينَ (82)

And they used to carve from the mountains houses feeling secure.
[Al Quran ; 15:82]

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّيْحَةُ مُصْبِحِينَ (83)

So the shriek seized them by morning.
[Al Quran ; 15:83]

فَمَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ (84)

And nothing availed them from what they used to earn.
[Al Quran ; 15:84]

وَمَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ ۗ وَإِنَّ السَّاعَةَ لَآتِيَةٌ ۖ فَاصْفَحِ الصَّفْحَ الْجَمِيلَ (85)

And We have not created the heavens and the earth and what is between both except in truth. And indeed, the hour is surely coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness.
[Al Quran ; 15:85]

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ الْخَلَّاقُ الْعَلِيمُ (86)

Indeed, your Lord is the Creator, the Knowing.
[Al Quran ; 15:86]

وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَاكَ سَبْعًا مِنَ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنَ الْعَظِيمَ (87)

And We have certainly given you seven verses and the great Quran.
[Al Quran ; 15:87]

لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِ أَزْوَاجًا مِنْهُمْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ (88)

Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to (certain) pairs among them; and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing (show kindness) to the believers.
[Al Quran ; 15:88]

وَقُلْ إِنِّي أَنَا النَّذِيرُ الْمُبِينُ (89)

And say: Indeed, I am the clear warner.
[Al Quran ; 15:89]

كَمَا أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَى الْمُقْتَسِمِينَ (90)

Likewise We sent down to the dividers.
[Al Quran ; 15:90]

الَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا الْقُرْآنَ عِضِينَ (91)

Those who made the Quran into parts.
[Al Quran ; 15:91]

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْأَلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ (92)

So, by your Lord, We will surely question them all together.
[Al Quran ; 15:92]

عَمَّا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ (93)

As to what they used to do.
[Al Quran ; 15:93]

فَاصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَرُ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ (94)

So convey what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists.
[Al Quran ; 15:94]

إِنَّا كَفَيْنَاكَ الْمُسْتَهْزِئِينَ (95)

Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers.
[Al Quran ; 15:95]

الَّذِينَ يَجْعَلُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا آخَرَ ۚ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ (96)

Who make with Allah another god. And they are going to know.
[Al Quran ; 15:96]

وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ (97)

And We surely know that your chest constrains by what they say.
[Al Quran ; 15:97]

فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُنْ مِنَ السَّاجِدِينَ (98)

So glrify with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate.
[Al Quran ; 15:98]

وَاعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ الْيَقِينُ (99)

And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty.
[Al Quran ; 15:99]
