Al-Balad (The City)

Translation

Verses 1-20

بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.

لَا أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ (1)

I swear by this city (Mecca).
[Al Quran ; 90:1]

وَأَنْتَ حِلٌّ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ (2)

And you are residing in this city.
[Al Quran ; 90:2]

وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ (3)

And (by) the begetter and whom he begot.
[Al Quran ; 90:3]

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ (4)

We have certainly created the human into hardship.
[Al Quran ; 90:4]

أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَنْ يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ (5)

Does he think that never will he be overcome by anyone?
[Al Quran ; 90:5]

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُبَدًا (6)

He says: I have destroyed an abundance wealth.
[Al Quran ; 90:6]

أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ (7)

Does he think that he was not seen by anyone?
[Al Quran ; 90:7]

أَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ عَيْنَيْنِ (8)

Have We not made for him two eyes?
[Al Quran ; 90:8]

وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ (9)

And a tongue and two lips?
[Al Quran ; 90:9]

وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ (10)

And have shown him the two ways?
[Al Quran ; 90:10]

فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ (11)

But he would not break through the hard pass.
[Al Quran ; 90:11]

وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ (12)

And what can make you realize what is the hard pass?
[Al Quran ; 90:12]

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ (13)

(It is) the freeing of a slave.
[Al Quran ; 90:13]

أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ (14)

Or the feeding (of others) in a day of hunger.
[Al Quran ; 90:14]

يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ (15)

An orphan of near relationship.
[Al Quran ; 90:15]

أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ (16)

Or to a needy in misery.
[Al Quran ; 90:16]

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ (17)

And then he is of those who have believed and advised one another to show patience and advised one another to show mercy.
[Al Quran ; 90:17]

أُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ (18)

It is them who are the companions of the right.
[Al Quran ; 90:18]

وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ (19)

And those who have disbelieved in Our signs, they are the companions of the left.
[Al Quran ; 90:19]

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُؤْصَدَةٌ (20)

Over them will be fire closed in.
[Al Quran ; 90:20]
